Description:
In 2020, DCD, in close collaboration with all relevant stakeholders, developed the Abu Dhabi Strategy for people of determination 2020-2024 (POD strategy 1.0) that was launched by HH. Sheikh Mohammed bi Zayed Al Nahyan in September 2020. The strategy is an emirate-wide cross-sectorial roadmap with avision for an inclusive and empowering community that promotes and safe-guards the rights and dignities of people with determination. It is based on the social and human-rights-based model of disability. It recognizes attitudes, practices and structures can be disa-bling and act as barriers preventingpeople from fulfilling their potential and exercising their rights as equal members of the com-munity. This aligns with the UN CRPD, which provides that disability results from the ‘interaction between persons with impair-ments and attitudinal and environmental barriers hindering full and effectiveparticipation in society on an equal basis with oth-ers'. The Strategy focuses on removing these barriers so people with disability can fully and effectively participate in and contribute to society by adopting a twin-track approach (mainstreaming disability and targeted intervention) across its policyand program-matic agenda. With the first cycle of the Strategy coming to a closure, DCD is planning a refresh of the strategy to review, update, and enhance the existing strategy and sets out a 5-year plan for continuing to improve the lives of People of determination. The expected output is a PODstrategy 2.0.
