Summary: Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is the study of genetic variability affecting an individual's response to medications. It is considered to be a low-hanging fruit and one of the first clinical applications of genomics. The expected reduction in 'trial and error' prescribing should lead to more efficacious, safer and cost-effective therapies. The most prominent applications of PGx are in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including anticoagulants (e.g. coumarins), antiplatelets (e.g. clopidogrel) and anti-hypercholesterolemics (e.g. statins). Randomized clinical trials demonstrated that a strategy with PGx testing prior to prescribing leads to improved patieni outcome.
