Summary: Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is the study of genetic variability affecting an individual's response to medications. It is considered to be a low-hanging fruit and one of the first clinical applications of genomics. It allows patients stratification rather than the traditional 'one size fits all' approach to prescribing drugs. The expected reduction in 'trial and error' prescribing should lead to more efficacious, safer and cost-effective therapies. The most prominent applications of PGx are in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including anticoagulants (e.g. coumarins), antiplatelets (e.g. clopidogrel) and anti-hypercholesterolemics (e.g. statins). Randomized clinical trials demonstrated that a strategy with PGx testing prior to prescribing leads to improved patieni outcome.
